A recently published ‘precision satellite mapping study’, has shown that the volume of chopped wood from European woodland between 2016 and 2018 had risen significantly. The data shows a rise of nearly 70% compared to the amount chopped between 2011 and 2015 and may pose an issue to global forests.

The reason behind the increase in incinerating woodland is because it is extremely cheap in relation to another alternative, the li-ion battery. As well as being cheaper, a kilo of wood holds about ten times more energy than a kilo of li-ion battery.

The UK is unfortunately the biggest contributor to the increase of wood burning as it seems to be importing compressed, dried and pelleted woodland from countries in North America. Even though the UK has seen a huge increase in terawatt hours, Germany still has almost 40% more than the UK.
