Fines set to increase for fly-tipping and littering in Manchester

According to the Manchester Evening News, fines for littering and fly tipping will be increased to £150 (an increase of £50  from the previous charge). This is the result of a significant rise in offences in the past year. The Local Council are hopeful the increase will act as a deterrent to offenders and reduce the number of offences, making Manchester look cleaner.

As a result of lockdown measures, the amount of people visiting or working in the city centre has significantly dropped. This has resulted in the decrease of litter on the streets and Manchester Council want this to continue.

However, due to multiple Waste & Recycling Centres being closed because of the pandemic, there has been a huge increase in fly tipping across Manchester and the rest of the UK. Studies at the Universities of Portsmouth and Southampton have shown there has been an increase of nearly 300% cases since the start of lockdown.
