China to change solid waste laws from September

ste waste latest recycling news 1

China began importing solid waste in the 1980’s. It is one of the world’s largest importers despite a poor capability for disposal.

However, they are now set to ban all imports of solid waste such as paper, cardboard and other materials from 2021. This is in line with policies that were set in place in 2017, as part of an effort to reduce effects of pollution. In addition, research has shown that some businesses were profiting off the illegal trade of importing foreign waste which comes as a threat to public and environmental health.

China imported 2.49 million tonnes of solid waste from January to April this year. This was a huge reduction of 47.3% from the previous year.
