Electronic Waste increases without the capability to recycle

In 2019 there was 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste generated globally, with Europe contributing around 12 million tonnes to the total. It has been predicted that there will be a 39% increase in e-waste by 2030. This figure shows that it is the one of the fastest growing sectors within the waste industry. 

A recent study has shown that 9.3 million tonnes of e-waste was recycled in 2019, making it just 17.4% of the total produced that year. Europe has recycled the most e-waste globally; a figure of 42.5% of the total amount recycled. However, it is still unclear the amount of undocumented e-waste produced, that gets tipped or goes into general waste.

Toxic materials, such as mercury, from non-recycled e-waste are being released into the environment. This can seriously harm the digestive and immune systems of individuals who live and work in and around the e-waste scrap yards, along with the harmful effects it can have on the surrounding nature habitats.
